Christian nationalism is an anti-democratic movement which seeks to instantiate a traditionalist social hierarchy via a Christian theology. You’ve read the open letters from Wyoming people of faith. You’ve read the explainer on Christian nationalism on this site. You’ve seen the reports and surveys from Public Religion Research Inc (PRRI) about Christian nationalism.

You know what is at stake.

So when week one of the 68th Wyoming legislature demonstrated open support of Christian nationalism—under the auspices of “conservative values”—we can’t help but feel it critical to share more information about how the rising influence of Christian nationalism in Wyoming politics poses a major threat to the health of our republic.

In Wyoming—as is true nationwide—the language of political violence increasingly comes cloaked with religious rhetoric.

Christian nationalism supporters are significantly more likely to endorse the idea that violence might be necessary to protect the country or secure the “rightful” political leadership.

When combined with unchecked comments from those in power, this creates the conditions in which violence becomes more likely, especially when outside groups with extremist views continue to work to infiltrate the state. Extremist rhetoric – increasingly linked to elected officials in the state who have ties to national groups – has started to lead to disruption of democracy, fear, and even violence.

We want to create opportunities for Wyoming people of faith to speak up and speak out against hate, intolerance, and bigotry. This work will only continue to grow in importance.
